On the origin of sunspots

چکیده

It is proposed that sunspots (and other flux emergence phenomena) originate due to the presence of fluctuating magnetic fields in addition to the regular, mean field in the convection zone. The mean field predicted by dynamo theories is too weak by itself to emerge at the surface of the Sun. However, the same dynamoprocesses that produce themeanfield also produce fluctuating fields. It is suggested here that magnetic fields emerge at the solar surface at those random times and places when the total magnetic field (mean field plus fluctuations) exceeds the threshold for buoyancy. In this way the mean field is responsible for observed regularities of the sunspot magnetic fields, such as theHale’s law and the 11-year periodicity, and the fluctuations are responsible for emergence of the magnetic field of individual sunspots. A simple illustrative model calculation of a series of ”sunspot cycles” is presented. Themodel spectrum compares well with the observed spectrum of sunspots.

The relation between the number of sunspots and fluctuation in the trend of climatic components in Iran during recent decades

This analysis was conducted on 31 synoptic stations in Iran. Initially, the Mann-Kendall test was administered in order to analyse the trend of alterations of these two components over time and the results suggest that 16% of the stations show significant relationship with annual precipitation (positive and negative). More stations showed significant relationships between sunspots and minimum a...

Letter to the Editor Oscillations of sunspot magnetic fields

We report on velocity and magnetic field oscillations observed in sunspots using the MDI instrument onboard SOHO. In addition to the well-known velocity oscillations, the data clearly show highly localised oscillations of the magnetogram signal in different parts of the sunspots. We show that only oscillations of the magnetic field vector can produce the observed magnetogram oscillations, and t...

Evidence of an Association between the Presence of Penumbrae and Strong Radial Outflows in Sunspots

Time series of high-resolution images of the complex active region NOAA 10786 are studied. The observations were performed in G-band (430.5 nm) and in the nearby continuum (463.3 nm), on July 9, 2005 at the Swedish 1-meter Solar Telecope (SST) in La Palma. Granular proper motions in the surroundings of the sunspots have been quantified. A large-scale radial outflow in the velocity range 0.3 1 k...

Magnetic Structure of Sunspots

In this review we give an overview about the current state-of-knowledge of the magnetic field in sunspots from an observational point of view. We start by offering a brief description of tools that are most commonly employed to infer the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere with emphasis in the photosphere of sunspots. We then address separately the global and local magnetic structure of suns...

Time Distance Study of Isolated Sunspots

We present a comparative seismic study of conditions around and beneath isolated sunspots. Using the European Grid of Solar Observations’ Solar Feature Catalogue of sunspots derived from SOHO/MDI continuum and magnetogram data, 1996-2005, we identify a set of isolated sunspots by checking that within a Carrington Rotation there were no other spots detected in the vicinity. We then use level-2 t...
